What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass weight loss surgery, also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass some of the stomach. The surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach, which restricts how much food can enter.

The small intestine is also attached so that it bypasses part of the stomach, further limiting how much food you can eat. This makes you feel full faster and longer. A gastric bypass provideslong-term weight loss for people who are severely obese.

How Much Weight Can You Lose?

Typically, patients lose 50 to 60 percent of their excess weight after surgery. The average amount of weight loss with gastric bypass surgery is 70 percent of excess body weight. However, the percentage of people who have significant weight loss is low. For example, only 20 to 25 percent of patients with a body mass index greater than 50 achieve that level of weight loss. This also depends on the gastric bypass weight loss timeline.

Factors that affect weight loss after gastric bypass

A)    Diet

After gastric bypass surgery, you should eat a diet that contains mostly protein and fat. This slows down the movement of food from your stomach into your small intestine, allowing you to feel full longer.

In addition, people who have had a gastric bypass typically feel nauseated for several weeks after their operation. Nausea makes it difficult to eat foods that are high in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables.

The doctor may give you vitamin supplements to make up for any nutritional deficiencies that result from these changes in your eating habits. You should not take over-the-counter vitamins because they can interfere with the effectiveness of certain drugs, such as antibiotics.

B)    Exercise

After gastric bypass surgery, you should exercise regularly. It will help maintain your weight loss by preventing the return of your appetite.

It is not safe to do more than 150 minutes of light-duty exercises per week, or 75 minutes of moderate-exercise activity. Alternatively, you may do 50 minutes of strenuous exercise three times a week.

C)    Behavior modification

It is important to change your eating and exercise habits after a gastric bypass procedure. The doctor may recommend that you consult a professional who specializes in behavior modification. This person can help you understand how changes in your diet or activity affect weight loss, and how to adjust your lifestyle accordingly.

You should also follow the surgeon’s instructions for postsurgical care. In addition, you should take the antibiotics that your doctor of Gastric Bypass Surgery in Lubbock  prescribes to reduce your risk of developing a stomach infection.
